donor management software, marketing automation, website content management platforms and the plethora of funding platforms and crowdsourcing, it is nearly impossible to consider all options and know what will work. Thus, when thinking about technology for your non-profit it is always good to find a trusted source and ask a lot of questions. In the meantime, here are five questions you must ask to determine if your proposed solutions are inspired and will help you grow:
1.
Will it make it easier or harder for donors to
communicate with the fundraising team? This seems obvious, but rarely is this
question asked. We have seen systems built only to realize that the system is
too complicated and non-user friendly. Take your time and think through how you
will use the new technology.
2.
Is it really necessary? This sounds like
something you would not need to ask, but we have seen non-profits embark down
the road on adding what we like to call the new flavor of the month technology
because some cool salesperson with great swagger sold them a bill of goods.
While it may sound good, what problem is the new technology really solving?
Rely on trusted experts here and you will probably save yourself a lot of time
and money.
3.
Does this software vendor have scalability? Why
scalability? Well, you don’t want to spend money today only to rip out your
work a few months down the line because the current set-up can’t handle your
mad skills at growing the non-profit. This is where having a technical expert
either on-staff or as a vendor is hugely helpful.
4.
What kind of maintenance or on-going support
will this new software need? Will it require special training? This is often
one of the most overlooked questions and super important to a successful
implementation. If you have never installed a new software, just know the
learning curve can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending upon
the expert support and training plan you have in place.
5.
What are all the options? Are there others that
are better, faster or stronger? Remember, tech sales people are often very
refined and know how to tap into the excitement of what it is you are trying to
accomplish. Be smart, have support around you who can evaluate new technologies
with critical thinking.
By reviewing these simple questions and surrounding yourself
with the right team, you can create a technology stack that is both inspired
and scalable. Now, go forth and drive revenue through donations with ease while
using all the right tech.
